Summer Outing 2013 Recap
Prior to the election cycle in 2012, Dan
Danner, President of National Federation
of Independent Business (NFIB) wrote in
an article entitle
Why Small Business is
Big in Politics
that “It seems everyone in
Washington loves small business, or pre-
tends they do.”
1
For good reason, the
small business admini-
stration defines a
small business as one
with fewer than 500
employees. Which
means small business
accounts for 99.7 per-
cent of all U.S. em-
ployers, and it employs nearly 50% of the
private-sector workforce. Even just the
smallest employers, those with fewer than
20 workers, account for 89.3 percent of all
employer firms, according to the Small
Business Administration.
The bottom line is that small business has
a big voice in what happens with the
economy, and voters know it. Gallup did a
survey asking who people trust when it
comes to coming up with ideas for creat-
ing jobs. The No. 1 answer: small busi-
ness, before governors, academics, mem-
bers of Congress or the president.
1
"The small-business
owner is always the
good guy in the mov-
ies," says Frank Luntz,
a language specialist
and a GOP pollster.
"Being a small-
business owner is the
American dream. It's
the epitome of success. People respect
that individual."
2
Americans may have mixed feelings
about big business and Wall Street, but
Luntz says they identify with small busi-
ness and Main Street — and politicians
are keenly aware of it.

3rd Annual Iowa Hill Day Set
Small-business owners
account for about 11%
of registered voters –
about the same as
union members
