Benefits of Certification to the Customer

The added benefit of a safety system is creating a

climate where employees and customers can be

safe from harm. The certification standards for safe-

ty take into account legal requirements and infor-

mation about risks. A safety system is also the best

way to defend a facility from fines for minor infrac-

tions. An occupational health and safety manage-

ment system promotes a safe and healthy working

environment by providing a framework that helps

organizations to:

Identify and control health and safety risks

Reduce the potential for accidents

Aid legal compliance

Improve overall performance

Safety management systems can be aligned with

existing quality and environmental management

systems through certification programs. Many or-

ganizations start with the quality management sys-

tem then add the environment management require-

ments. The next generation of certification will in-

clude ramping up quality management standards.

The ISO 9000 quality management system is de-

signed to help facilities meet the needs of custom-

ers while meeting regulatory requirements related to

a product such as department of transportation laws

governing salvage vehicles. ISO 9000 deals with the

fundamentals of quality management sys-

tems, including the eight management principles

upon which the family of standards is based. While

the basic foundation of quality management remains

the same, ISO 9000 is being updated in 2015. The

changes are mostly geared toward ensuring man-

agement support at the highest level.

The eight principles are: customer focus; leadership;

involvement of people; process approach; system

approach to management; factual approach to deci-

sion making; and mutually beneficial supplier rela-

tionships.

Auto recycling certification programs address some

of the principles of quality management in the stand-

ards set for licensing and permitting as well as the

general business standards for aesthetics. There is
